What do employers test for in a drug test?

Most employer drug tests screen for a standard group of commonly misused substances rather than every possible drug. The specific substances tested depend on workplace policy, job requirements, and applicable laws, but many employers use similar baseline panels.
A common starting point is the standard urine drug screen, which often includes marijuana (THC), cocaine, opioids (such as heroin, morphine, or codeine), amphetamines or methamphetamines, and phencyclidine (PCP). Some employers use expanded panels that also test for prescription opioids like oxycodone, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or other sedatives.
Alcohol is handled differently. Routine employment drug tests do not always include alcohol unless the job is safety-sensitive or there is cause for testing. When alcohol is tested, breath, blood, or urine methods may be used, depending on policy and timing.
Testing scope can vary by industry. Transportation, healthcare, construction, and other safety-critical fields often follow federal or state testing standards that specify required substances and procedures. In contrast, private employers may design their own panels within legal limits.
Understanding what employers test for helps clarify expectations. Drug tests are designed to identify recent or ongoing substance use relevant to workplace safety and policy, not to detect every substance someone may have ever used. The exact panel used is typically determined in advance and applied consistently within an organization.
