Binge drinking is defined as drinking enough alcohol in a short period of time to raise blood alcohol levels to a point that significantly impairs judgment, coordination, and decision-making. In practical terms, this usually means four or more drinks for women, or five or more drinks for men, within about two hours.
This pattern matters because consuming alcohol rapidly overwhelms the body’s ability to process it safely. As alcohol levels rise quickly, the brain becomes less able to regulate behavior, increasing the risk of accidents, injuries, risky decisions, and alcohol poisoning. Even people who do not drink often can experience serious harm when alcohol is consumed in this concentrated way.
Binge drinking can vary based on body size, age, medications, and how quickly drinks are consumed. What counts as a binge for one person may occur with fewer drinks for someone else, especially if alcohol is consumed on an empty stomach or combined with certain medications.
In context, binge drinking is not defined by how often someone drinks or whether they consider themselves a “problem drinker,” but by how much alcohol is consumed within a single drinking episode and time frame, and the level of risk created in that moment.
